The first courses in ship design was offered in 1881 by Mortimer Cooley, assistant engineer in the U.S. navy who had been detailed to the university as professor of Steam Engineering and Iron Shipbuilding. Congregational minister, founder and trustee of Iowa College. Dr. Adams was a member of the Iowa Band of Congregational missionaries who came to Iowa in 1843. He served as a pastor in Mt. Pleasant, Davenport, Decorah and Eldora. He was instrumental in the founding of Iowa College in Davenport. The college subsequently moved to Grinnell.
